Film Production Services

To continue with our book metaphor, production is the step where all the pages are gathered. This is the action phase, where the flashy stuff happens.

As a full service production company, New Standard has a crew that is ready and able to handle your project. Our philosophy is that the size of the crew should fit the size of the project, and we use as many or as few people as we need to get your project done effectively, professionally, and efficiently. We want your project to have that “it” factor you are after, and we are ready to make that happen. Below are some of the various roles that New Standard can and will fill.

Let’s talk about some of the roles on a set:

  • Director: The director is responsible for positioning and directing the actors, as well as controlling the basic camera moves and general adjustments of the set, be it lighting, sound, or anything he deems necessary to change to more effectively get his vision across.
  • DP: The DP (Director of Photography) operates the camera. They are responsible for the movement of a shot, of angles and changes, any type of camera movement. He also works with the art and lighting departments, as well as the director. He is assisted by the First AC.
  • First AC: The First AC (First Assistant Camera) is the right hand of the DP. The first AC works on the more minute details of camera operating and prep. They are in charge of pulling focus, keeping focus during shots, lens maintenance, and other minutiae that accompany camera operation.
  • Production Designer: the production designer is in charge of the look and feel of the film, and that includes the set. He will often be assisted by art directors and other members of the art department in making sure that the shot is on par with the director’s vision.
  • Art department: This is comprised of any number of people, all in charge of set decoration, continuity, props, and numerous other visual elements. The makeup artists and wardrobe will also be on set to monitor and repair any damage that may have happened during the rigors of filming.
  • Gaffer/Lighting department: The gaffer works with his crew to get the set lit properly for the scene. This requires multiple lights, gels, and about a thousand other lighting tricks to create the perfectly lit frame. Without the lighting team, you don’t have a shot.
  • Production Sound Mixer/Boom Operator: The production sound mixer is in charge of effectively and discreetly capturing the dialogue on set. The Boom operator must keep the mic in the sweet spot to get the desired sound mix…and stay out of the view of the camera.
  • Script supervisor: The script supervisor’s primary responsibility is to making sure that the script is accurately and consistently performed, for each and every take. It is also their job to notate if and how actors say certain lines, and notate what has been acted out and what has been adlibbed, so that when the scene is taken at a different angle, the content has not changed. This allows editing and finalizing the movie to go more smoothly. The script supervisor must also pay attention to any type of interaction between characters, so that it also stays consistent.
  • Grip/PA: Grips and PA’s are important (and often under-appreciated) members of the crew. They are in charge of….well, whatever they need to be. They may be required to run coffee, or rescue someone from a burning building. Okay, maybe not rescue… but if you asked a grip to do it, they would totally consider it.

The size of your production crew will vary depending on the size and requirements of each project, but regardless of how big or small, someone will be filling each and every one of these roles.
